Homeschooling through the summer is a joy not a burden. We love the routine of knowing what each day brings. I love that the kids won’t have that summer brain drain nor the couple weeks of review in the fall. We love homeschooling year-round.
The first week of the new school year was the first week of July.
I didn’t have my full detailed 6-week plan ready to go. Too tired and still on IV antibiotics. They take it out of you. That and dealing with recovering from my latest brush with sepsis.
I did know what we were doing the first week because it was going to be light and fun given the holiday. We worked hard on Monday and early Tuesday then jumped to Friday and Saturday. Weird schedule even for us but we have the holiday and a teen sleepover so the house was a bit crazy.
We started out WriteShop programs. The little one (now a preteen ugh don’t remind me) is in the Junior level E the rest of the bunch are in the middle/high school level book 1. You can choose 2 tracts the normal 2 year path or the advanced 1 year path. 2 kids are going the normal path. 1 has chosen to speed things along and do it all in 1 year.
*if you need to this program in a slower pace it is very forgiving*
I am starting the kids on new math programs. The kids burnt out on the old books last spring. Time for something fresh and exciting.
Finally, they covered Neptune and Uranus in Apologia’s Astronomy Days of Creation. 2 kids are also using the journals along with the book. We should be done with that in a week or two depending on how many experiments we pack in.
Summer school for us includes lots of gardening, nature walks, bird/animal watching, hands on field trips and more. I make sure that we are relaxed enough in our schedule that if the kids get a call from grandma or their bestie to come spend the night they can.
Early in the spring the kids started a 3 sisters garden on our back porch. A 3 sisters garden is from Native American history. Beans, Corn, and Squash seeds buried with a fish. We skipped the fish. The little garden is growing strong though.
Next week will be a more solid week of calmness. No dr appointments scheduled. Nothing big going on. I am hoping with blueberry and blackberry season here to do some canning. Next week is also our big once a month shopping run. Once that is here I do freezer meals for most of the month as well.
