Warriors of Honor is a Civil War documentary for those that want to go deeper and find a more balanced historical truth. I was raised in the north with an early elementary education of Robert E Lee as a womanizing drinker (not true.) Later in high school my AP history teacher was much more balanced in his teaching that both sides had their ups and downs. I was pleasantly surprised that New Liberty Videos produced a documentary that focused on Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson’s lives did try to balance their documentary of the civil war.
This is a documentary and yet I cried. You get such a close look into several families that you can’t help but be moved. To me that means the documentary was great and I was able to immerse myself into history. My children must have thought the same because my son jumped up about 20 minutes in and yelled ” ahh help I’m learning!” after getting a drink he came back and watched the rest. What a drama king!
If your middle school or high school student is in American History this is a fine resource to add to your lesson plan. Do be aware that there are real photos of the time and a realistic portrayal of the war. Meaning there are lots of weapons, gun blasts, and some realistic scenes of the medical abilities of the time. There are battle field photographs of dead soldiers and wounded soldiers. The rest of the scenes rely heavily on reenactments of the various civil war battles. The good side of using those graphic photographs is the war was real. The people who died should be mourned and honored, both sides.
There are 3 Bonus segments you will want to watch as well.
- Slavery
- Sam Davis
- The Palmyra Incident <jaw dropping, I had no idea but everyone should know of this incident>
The documentary Warriors of Honor is an enriching resource to your American History class. After watching this DVD I will be looking at the various other DVD this company has to see if I can include others. Think of this DVD as a conversation starter. I means of testing critical thinking and personal decision making. Whether you agree 100% with the southern leaning of this DVD or not at least you are given a means to see another view of history thus making your knowledge base that much stronger.

I enjoyed your balanced review. I personally loved the documentary and the view it expressed. I do think we have a need to teach our children both sides of the war to honor all those who fought and died for what they believed in.
