VocabAhead SAT Vocabulary: Cartoons, Videos, & MP3s is a book with a downloadable videos and MP3s to go with it. This book has 30 lessons with 10 words each. There is a review page at the end of the lesson. Each page shows you a word your teen will need to know for their SAT, the definition, a cartoon to illustrate it, synonyms and antonyms. This rattled the memories of my SAT testing were not just what is a word, but what is it’s antonym.
My seventh grader and my gifted child both were my beautiful little guinea pigs for this book. I knew this book was aimed at well above their heads, teens prepping for the SAT. I wanted to see how well the words matched the pictures and were the definitions mixed with the pictures more memorable.
My seventh grader is a very visual person. If she could draw her way through school she would. Any type of learning that is visual or audio based has her attention. She laughed through many words. Better yet she remembers many of the words we went over. Spelling…not so much, maybe next time we go over them it will come easier. Their definition was either remembered or was triggered just by a glance at the picture involved. This was a wonderful way to spice up what can be a boring subject, vocabulary.
My gifted child is a reading oriented child. She listened and read the page but the book just didn’t work for her. The ipad download able version caught her attention though. She is happy to cuddle under a blanket and look at the videos that go with the words.
I think if you followed this book your teen (especially the visually based teen) will have a wonderful highly capable vocabulary for their SAT. How VocabAhead has this book, and online section set up hardly makes it seem like you are learning vocabulary. As a teen I do think I would have loved this method.
