WOW friends I never once imagined how HUGE the Teach Them Diligently Nashville convention was going to be. I had plans to post several times while there but instead my family and I hung out all weekend on the convention floor and I gave 4 workshops and had a fabulous time!
The amount of expertise available this weekend at the convention was mind boggling. I was sneaking out my booth chatting with other moms/vendors/speakers. My kids were hanging out with the Chess tournament, free art classes, and Apologia science experiments. Everyone in the family was thrilled with the variety available.
On the sensory side of the house I knew going in that this would be a large convention with lots of people so I encouraged some sensory organizing techniques before we ever showed up.
1) Comfortable Clothing Wear layers that are light and a jacket to put on in case we got a colder room. In conventions halls you never know what you are going to face temperature wise.
2) Sensory/comfort items are allowed. One of my littles wore her monkey hat that pulls down over her ears blocking out some noise and also blocks some visual out because it hugs the sides of her face. She was much better able to focus and hear me.
3) Tummys full and watered. Don’t come to the convention hungry or thirsty. I also strongly encourage a bathroom break before you get to the convention. A pause in the hotel room is much easier than down in the public restroom.
4) Take Breaks When you get down to the convention hall or speakers sessions take breaks. Find a quiet corner or hall to just sit and restore balance. Look over the papers you have gotten or take notes from the conversations you have had so something important doesn’t get lost in the deluge of great info.
5) Go to the convention for the full weekend. This goes along with those breaks. There are times when 3pm hits and no matter how long a break you take, your day is done. If you are prepared to come back the next morning after a refreshing night’s sleep it will be much easier on you and your family. Come on Thursday and go low and slow all weekend long. You will be so blessed for it!
