Walks on the Wildside: Book One in a Series Theraparenting: A Guide for Creatively Promoting Motor Skills in Children
By: Jean A Wetherilt, OTR/L
Have you ever wanted ideas on how to encourage motor skills in your child? How to start the day with a bang and slip in a bit of therapy. 😉 Here is a book to guide you through just that, ‘theraparenting’.
I have never heard of ‘theraparenting’ before but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the idea! Of the many hats I have to wear in a day theraparenting is definitely one of them!
Jean has created a small sturdy binder of activities for you into work with all your kids to encourage movement, motor skills, animal knowledge, and creative/imaginative play. All things that make me very happy.
Frankly there are times when my coffee has yet to kick in but I know we need to start the day. While I was reviewing this product we had one of those Monday’s. It was raining and dreary. Our energy level was low and slow. I pulled out Jean’s book and we all took a walk on the wildside!
By the end of the warm up the smiles had started. Since my littlest one was doing a lapbook on farm animals I turned to the donkey section. I simply read straight from the book and the kids did the exercises. It was simple. Great motor skills work. When the kids sat down the little ones were able to use the stencils provided to make their own donkey tracks.
The binder is hard wearing. It has inner pockets on the front and back. There are two sheets of stencils that will last for a long time. The actual directions are printed on card stock and they too will be able to handle lots of flipping back and forth.
For use in a special needs homeschooling home I could easily see you using this as a portion of your physical education program. You could use this with your therapists to incorporate fun and science in your everyday life. This could be used for a fun co-op warm up.
I give this book high marks for quality of the material, ease of use, and information about exactly what skills this particular lesson will help strengthen.
