Pointing Your Teen’s Heart Towards God!
I love parenting pre-teens and teens! It can be a trial at times. They can stretch you to your limits while testing theirs. Therefore I am open for sound parenting advice. Today’s review is Family Toolbox by the National Center for Biblical Parenting. I enjoyed the parenting course, I hope you will too.
Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, BSN are featured in the DVD walking you through the Family Toolbox. The goal of the Family Toolbox is to help you and your teen transition from a child’s thinking to a Godly adult. First learning respect in our words and actions. Then moving on to creating in your heart and mind the motivation to do the right thing. Change will come in those teen years and don’t we all want the changes to be aimed at helping our teens grow into Godly productive adults.
16 Life Success Principles are the core of the program. They are broken down into 8 lessons that you and teen work through together. The DVD has a Parent portion where you get a private talk through of the lesson. The video is about 10 minutes long and full of solid information for that lesson and parenting in general. Then there is the family portion of the DVD that you watch WITH your teen.
The family watching portion is short sweet and to the point. Perfect for a short attention span teen. Also perfect if the lesson in question hits a raw nerve. We found that when the lesson was a heart issue that needed help in our family that the teen in question got defensive at first. The DVD was short and the parent led lesson that I had watched ahead of time helped. Is this easy. No, but it is worth it.
Taking your parenting from the carrot or the stick style to a heart based correction using God’s word as guidance will help your teen blossom.
The prep on this was about a half and hour. Perhaps a bit more the first lesson because hubby and I needed to do some homework and thinking about each child privately. Then as you sit for each lesson with your child it is short as 30 minutes and then you revisit the lesson through the week or days that follow. Lesson can be longer especially if you want to go back and repeat the video to talk through the actions of the family situation that you see.
Heart Principles Covered:
- Respect
- Following Instructions (listening)
- Solving Problems Peacefully
- Accepting Correction
- Responsibility
- Accepting No
- Self-Control
- Servant’s Heart
I liked the Family Toolbox. Keeping it short and to the point was very appropriate for this age range and the lifestyle of most families. You can be an on the go family and still find time to incorporate this program into your lives. The family situations that were shown were very realistic and frankly a few hit home. Are you ready to shake up your parenting and get on track to being the parent of internally motivated self controlled young adults. Then you are ready for a Godly heart lead approach that Family Toolbox is helping parents enact.
