Looking for a fun interactive way to teach your kids K-2 science? Ready to try an online science program? We got to review Science4Us.com an online science program for early elementary students.
My two precious assistants for this adventure were Maggie 6yrs and Rose 8yrs old. The age range for the program is K-2 which means that Maggie was perfectly aged and Rose was just a touch older than usually recommended (but happy to join in the fun.)
Getting Started: When you log in as Teacher you have a lot of assistance at your fingertips. You can adjust each child’s assignments from your page. Good thing is there are short to the point videos to help you through the process.
I watched several videos to set up our accounts. I also found that the behind the scenes portion of the program was very intuitive. The set up happened all in one evening. Then Monday morning bright and early my girls were ready to go.
I started with the baseline of having science lessons 3 times a week. This is the student starting page. Your child will work through sections of science at a time such as life science had lessons on living/non-living. As your child works and completes the material they get a shiny gold star.
My girls loved the gold star and would announce each new star they earned to the whole house.
The girls loved Science4us.com so much that they happily kept going past their ‘lesson’ time. I found out that one of my girlies was incredibly motivated by the short tests after each section. My youngest had some problem with the functions like drawing in her science notebook. We corrected by allowing her to use my touch screen laptop instead of trying to work a mouse to create drawings.
Your child will be able to get to several grade appropriate subjects. Such as my quiz motivated child went first to the assigned Living/Non-Living section. When she had that done she clicked on the weather in another section and began learning about the water cycle. I really encouraged this.
I want my kids to thirst after learning. If she wants to learn about clouds and creatures all at the same time, GO FOR IT!
A big perk I found was this was not just a science program. There was alphabetization work and other language arts skills. Heavy in age appropriate math work. Finally the stellar cherry on top… Inference! There was a section of the weather that she was learning that had her ‘look out the window’ on the computer and infer how she needed to be dressed. The pictures changed but the underlying principle was always the same. Look at the clues shown and infer not guess wildly what the temperature and weather are like outside.
Inference is a skill I look for like a hawk in any curriculum. Also encouraging generalization in thinking. I was super excited to find that in this program.
Science4Us.com is an engaging online science program. The girls both told me that they loved it. Then asked if they could go online to work. 🙂 This is a great program to help you start science with your little one. Ease of use, a wide breadth of skills encouraged, and a solid basis in science to start a great homeschooling journey.
