“Wow!” “How awesome!” “This is neat mom, move over.” This is what I heard as I was pushed out of the way and my children took over the computer to work through the Wordtoons e-book.
There are some rules to Wordtoons.
“1. Start with a word written as plainly as possible.
2. Turn the word into a clear cartoon matching the word’s meaning.
3. Simple enought that anyone who can write can copy it.”
Seems pretty straightforward. For my oldest daughter who is blessed with creativity this should be no problem. For the rest of us art challenged folk this looks hard. I was wrong.
The kids loved the clear, simple pictures to follow. They took over my computer for over an hour! Even my 4 year old who is just learning to write got interested. She tried to do one of the words and she did a wonderful job!
I could see this helping children not just for fun but for spelling. My son is heavy into sight reading. He loved that the words became the picture and began chanting the letters. It is also a kinetic exercise that would work well for kids have to really feel and work with words.
I and the kids enjoyed this book tremendously. It is fun. It is also easy as can be for a busy homeschooling mom, no prep time. Get your paper, pencil and off you go!
Honesty note: I was asked to review Wordtoons for Homeschool.com so I received a free copy.
