Last year at the Eastern Panhandle Homeschooling Conference (West Virginia) I talked with a homeschooling father of 8 about his organization product, The Homeschool Organizer.
Troy L Parrish is a professional counselor that works with many children and teens. He made The Homeschool Organizer and The Homework Keeper from his years of experience. I bought The Homeschool Organizer.
I received a video and a CD of the pages to use. After looking through the material and listening to the program I was off. It is really a simple idea of color coding each subject and requiring student responsibility to finish their work. I bought different colored 3-ring binders for each child, each of my children responded differently.
My youngest loves it and has stickers all over her binder. You know instantly that the binder belongs to a girl 😉 She also loves to look through the binder Monday morning and see what is new to do.
My son is not so enthusiastic about the binder but he likes having a safe place for his completed work. For him it is more to protect and collect his hard work than to organize him.
Then my ADHD daughter… She didn’t like it at first. She didn’t want to fill out each day’s page, saying she had completed her work. We persisted and now she is still not thrilled but she is happier. She tells me she is glad that she has more control over her work and likes knowing that it is done.
There are many organizer out there on the market. What attracted me to this one is the child learning to be responsible for their work. One of my goals for my children is that they learn to be independent learners that I guide through their high school learning rather than dragging them kicking and screaming. This product has helped me along that path.
