Twas the day of Annual Assessment, when all through the house,
Mom was trying to print reports, but the batteries died in the mouse.
The books were piled high on the dining room table,
In hopes that the teacher would be kind and see their family was stable.
The children were bouncing on their beds in excitement!
While visions of number 2 pencils, and standardized tests danced in their heads
And momma in her ponytail, and I in my cap,
Were trying to calm everyone down, so they could have a quick nap.
When out on the front porch there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the kids room to see what was the matter.
Away to the front door I flew in a dash,
Glared through the window and saw the teacher’s car window flash.
The sun on the berm of newly mowed grass
Gave the glow to the toy soldiers attempting to prevent her to pass.
When to my wondering eyes who should appear,
The bright, cheerful teacher that had been here midyear.
Opening the door I turned, whistled, and called out to all.
“Now Austin, now Paul, now Molly, and Jordan.
Come on. Jacob, and Bella, on Kate and Morgan.
To the top of the stairs, to the dining room door!
Now dash away, dash away, come on ‘yall!”
In a twinkling of silence, the pause before a storm,
not a sound was to be heard in the newly cleaned home
Then pounding and running and the noise growing a pace.
Down the stairs they came in a loud noisy race
They were dressed in clean clothes no stain or tears,
Eager and chipper the herd bounded down the stairs.
The kids carried stuffies, books, and a trumpet to toot,
All to show the teacher their favorite homeschooling loot.
The teacher’s eyes how they twinkled! Her smile so merry!
Her laugh burst out like the tinkling of a fairy.
To the dining room she marched and sat ready to see,
All the year’s homeschooling the kids showed her with glee.
They laughed and talked, getting straight down to work.
Mom passed to each child their own schoolwork.
With a wink and signature she gave her approval.
Another year done all the hard work was fruitful.
She sprang from the table and made for the door.
Lots of hugs were given before she made it across the floor.
But I heard her exclaim, as she drove out of sight,
“Great homeschooling everyone, and to all a wonderful life!”
**Assessment time can be stressful. I hope you enjoyed! **
Obviously a homeschooling funny take on Clement Clarke Moore’s poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”
