I thought I knew a good deal about Mexico. I was wrong. I had no idea all the states that make up Mexico. The history of North America that comes directly from Mexico and migrated northward over the years. Frankly my knowledge of Mexico was spotty at best and not what I wanted to teach my kids. Thankfully I was asked to review Mexico: Coloring Book & Geography Study, Libro de Clorear y un Estudio de los Estados de Mexico by Katie Horner. Now we have a wonderful backbone to a unit study on Mexico!
There is even a bilingual version coming out soon.
I got an ebook version of the coloring book… let me use that word loosely here. While yes it is a coloring book the detail and information provided with it make it much more than a simple coloring book. I printed off a copy for all 5 of my kids from 1st grade up through high school. My intention is to have a large unit study on Mexico ending in a Cinco de Mayo party!
The detailed pictures of each individual state along with their coat of arms sparked a lot of conversation and learning. I added material as we needed it or desired to find out more about particular places in Mexico. A quick trip to the library was very helpful. I also found that Katie’s site had suggestions on high quality books to enrich our unit study.
The fun of the study took off quickly and the kids began guiding our learning adventures. The kids came up with the idea of tracing outlines of each states of Mexico and as we learn about them placing them on a huge poster board sheet like a puzzle. <<kinetic learning!!!>>
FYI CINCO DE MAYO>>> “commemorate the Mexican army‘s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862″ wikipedia
We are already planning as authentic a Cinco de Mayo party with decorations as possible. My son is now trying to interest us in building an Inca pyramid. That’s fine with me! What he doesn’t know, but will enjoy, is that his interesting ideas are going to lead to the history of Central America Incas, Mayans, and Native Americans. What a great way to end the official school year!
I was very impressed with Kathie’s Mexico geography coloring book! This book is perfect for teaching a detailed state by state knowledge of Mexico. Teaching an in-depth detailed knowledge of Mexico just in time for Cinco de Mayo. I am also interested in the aspect of having Spanish versions and bilingual versions. There is a huge need in the homeschooling community for a larger variety of Spanish material. Katie’s Mexico: Coloring Book & Geography Study, Libro de Clorear y un Estudio de los Estados de Mexico is high on my list of great finds!
