My oldest daughter was my helper learning Lightning Lit & Comp British Medieval (11th-12th) grade by Michael G. Gaunt . This is a course produces by Hewitt Homeschooling Resources uses British Medieval literature to help your high school level student spread their wings literature wise and learn college-level composition skills. My daughter and I opened the unassuming student book and looked over the first unit and we almost ran. This study is no joke! It is for students that are in 11th or 12th grade with a high degree of skills or desire to help them. My daughter isn’t the best at reading, she has dyslexia, and can struggle especially with reading material she doesn’t ‘like’. What would happen in the Laurie house trying to learn such in depth material?
I groaned. We started and thank you Dr Who. haha
My daughter has a love of all things British right now and I guess British Medieval reading material fits into that category.
This is designed as a semester literature course. There is a schedule fully laided out for you to follow. I was very pleased to see that Hewitt Homeschool Resources was aware of learning differences enough to also show a year long schedule. Thank You! Again they have already written a schedule based on a full year’s work.
Frankly for a student with reading difficulty there will most likely be a problem. English changed over the years that are covered by study. The early stories are very similar to today’s English. We moved through them slowly but surely.
However middle English is tough. My husband who has dyslexia cringed when I said we were reading Chaucer and The Gest of Robyn Hode. The student’s study is a FINE job of helping through footnotes and additional assistance in comprehension questions to guide your student through. My daughter and I looked at this material but did not make it to that point in the curriculum yet. My daughter is scared of this section but after reading through the material myself I believe we can work through it. However I am adding in extra time to allow for the possible challenges this section will cause.
Here is a taste of the indepth literature concepts that you’re high schooler will be learning.
Foreshadowing
Metaphor
Allegory
Theater
Tone
Ballad
Biography
Humor
Here are a list of the books that you will use or need in addition to the curriculum:
Beowlf (you need to get an unabridged addition)
Anglo-Saxon riddles (in the guide)
Piers the Ploughman (you need to get an unabridged addition)
York Mystery Play Cycle 42, The Ascension (in the guide)
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (you need to get an unabridged addition)
Selection from The Gest of Robyn Hode (in the guide)
“St. Thomas Becket” from The Golden Legend (in the guide)
Selections from The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer (you need to get an unabridged addition)
I want to point out that my daughter did learn quite a bit about literature during our review of this course. She also learned language arts skills that were at a higher level than I have ever pushed her before. There was also a portion of the Teacher’s guide just for a scaredy cat momma like me that didn’t want to grade her daughter’s written work. There was a portion that showed me how to grade written essays, comprehension, and larger written work. That was very helpful for me. I believe that the skills learned in this course will help my daughter in her written high stakes testing (ACT, SAT), her normal language arts material, and eventually her college studies.
The level of this study is high. When you student is done with it they will truly have accomplished a high level of language arts/literature possibly AP testable level knowledge of British literature.
**GIFTED alert there is in the back of the student course book additional material and ideas for a Honors level class. I looked at he listings… wow that will most definatly be a college applicable course. I have no doubt that a student that completes the Honors level course to a high degree of knowledge and understanding will be able to test out of at least some freshman college language arts.
If like me you are also putting together a transcript of your high schooler’s education then you will love that Hewitt Homeschool Resources has thought of that. There is a clear and simple sample of the course online at www.HewittHS.com They made me a happy high school homeschooling momma.

Would you like to know what other homeschoolers thought of the British Medieval and several other offerings that ranged across the grade levels.
