Are you struggling teaching science with your middle school or high school teen? Are you blessed with a creative, intuitive right hemisphered learner in a left brained world? There is an online curriculum Fascinating Education created by Dr. Margulies that could be a great way to teach your child science. My 8th grader and I reviewed Fascinating Education’s Biology program. They also have Chemistry and Physics. Fascinating Education revealed it’s self to be a wonderful teaching tool for science understanding and learning!
Dr. Margulies designed this program from a right-brained stance so I wanted a broader idea of how differing minds understood or did not his methods. I had my other older children nip in for a lesson or so along the way to see how differing learning style children handled the information. If a child helped me they had to go through an entire lesson. But Gabe was my main man helping me consistently through the review period!
This is a critical thinking higher learning biology. The lessons are on video with great graphics that are eye-catching but do not overwhelm sensory wise. There are written scripts available. In the end there are also test you can have your teen take to be sure of comprehension and learning.
The first lesson does talk about how the universe started. The narrator is very clear that he is not going to take sides Big Bang or God. Instead he wants to tell about the forces of the universe and how it works. I want you to know so that you can preview and/or be aware the various universe origins are talked about.
I had no problem with this given each child’s ability to think critically and make rational decisions. Also I always planned to show my teens the various thoughts on the creation of the universe in late middle school/ high school. I waited until we could have a conversation about it and the level this program is meant for meets my personal criteria perfectly. It made for an intense but wonderful time.
My middle school son that is a very black and white thinker (Asperger’s) sat and listened to the lessons. I was next to him and found it necessary to stop the lesson and talk about what the narrator was saying to ensure comprehension. We even split some more complex lessons into their slices of learning. I was very happy with this. My son learned and I was there to hear and gently guide him where he needed help. I believe that as an 8th grader he needed a bit more assistance than a teen in high school would. My junior would be able to sit and go through an entire lesson and bring to me lingering questions after the video was over.
There was very little I had to do to prepare for this science program. It is one of the most complete programs we have worked with. The narrator is slow and steady and complete. My more energetic child (ADHD) got antsy because of the depth of each lesson but she learned. The visual aspects of this program grabbed her attention. My other children found the pace just fine. Special perk is my children that have slower processing where able to follow this program and learn much better than some of the other high energy cartoon flashy online programs. Using a right brained format was a new and wonderful thing for us.
