This year one of my goals was to ‘Wander through the World’ a year of in-depth geography. When I was asked to help review Bonnie Rose Hudson’s new book Asia: Its People and History I said YES! This e-book turned out to be a homeschooling geography curriculum, history, and a look into how Christians live in far-flung countries of Asia. This program is designed to be used once a week for 16 weeks. Covering 6 countries in Asia. Bonnie understands and encourages you to adjust the speed up or down as it best fits your family and child’s abilities. I chose to walk through a country a week.
What would you do if having a Bible was illegal?
That was a question from the very first lesson about the country of Laos and it lit a fire under my family. While I have not overly sheltered the kids from the harsh realities of being a Christian in other places around the world. I have needed to filter what we read and how detailed it can be for emotionally delicate souls.
Perfectionism and black and white thinking make it more difficult to understand stories of Christians being persecuted. Asia: Its People and History uses a literature rich format to share sometimes emotionally sensitive stories about the harsh realities of being a Christian in a country where it is illegal. The short literature based stories helped my children understand better without overwhelming them with details.
Iran was another country we studied. I was very happy to have solid source to teach the kids about a country they hear every day in the news. Bonnie provided maps of the area to learn the entire area.
Over the course of our review I used the suggested sources (at the end of the e-book) such as links to free books for kids by The Voice of the Martyrs. I printed off the worksheets we needed on Sunday and put them into a binder for our year’s geography study. I also used simple black and white outlines of the country we were studying and had the kids outline them. Asia: Its People and History allowed me a firm foundation that worked fine on its own and allowed me the flexibility to enrich as I felt led. I got to use an e-book but if that is not your preferred a paperback version is just around the corner! Who is the author Bonnie Rose Hudson?
