When my autistic child “graduated” from our state’s early intervention program, it was assumed they would go straight to the local public special education preschool. I didn’t understand why preschool was being offered when my child clearly wasn’t developmentally ready for that level.
It can be hard to disagree with the “experts” early in the diagnosis. Clearly, they know more than you do and have seen what works and what doesn’t. You want to help your child every way possible. Early intervention is billed as the answer to everything. Parents are bullied into thinking there is no other way. Any of this sound familiar?
