Learning how to learn is extremely important! Just imagine for a minute that learning is a struggle for your child and now they have to prepare for big stakes testing and college. Lets give our kids the best chance possible to succeed! We got to review the teacher and student workbook of the Victus Study Skills System. The Victus Study Skills System ~ (www.StudySkillsSystem.org) by Susan B. Ison is a short intense how-to learn program.
The program has 10 lessons to complete. The Victus Study Skills System is designed to be finished front to back in one week. It is suggested that it will be about a half and hour a day but we were about 45 minutes a day. Sometimes longer. It was longer for us I think because we used this program as a time to consider the final couple years of high school and how my daughter needed to know how to take tests and classes.
As a high schooler facing ACT, SAT, college essays, and possible college classes my daughter needs a new set of skills. The Victus Study Skills System helps you teach the skills of studying, note taking, and organization that you may have jumped over like I did. What I like, is it teaches these skills in a highly compacted streamlined manner.
I thought it would be a great time to show you how a very kinetic learner with a learning disability versus a gifted child that is a very a visual/audio learner could use this program. Both kids are working at high school level work. (PS: the student workbook is meant for only one student therefore I did not complete the rest of the system with my second child. I just wanted to give you a balance perspective.)
We found that both of my girls were great in some mutual study habits. Then I had to *silently laugh* as their particular learning strengths lead them to completely different habits. We did this checklist together and when I asked some questions they both jumped to answer in very different ways. Such as ‘Do you begin preparing for a test many days before you take it?” my spontaneous ADHD teen was like “what?” my gifted gal said, “of course.”
LOL I love my wonderfully unique kids!
This was a solid way to be sure we were all on the same page. The progression of the system moves through how your student learns, setting goals, organization, and on to how to actually study and prepare for testing. Some material was not useful right now for us because it was set for a classroom. I can see how it will be used in the future. There were a few things that we chose not to do at all. I like the idea of using binders to organize paperwork, but for us as it was unnecessary to separate them by morning and afternoon classes. That portion of the system didn’t work for us.
There are aspects of the Vitus Study Skills System I adore. I want every student to know how best they learn. How to look at their habits and create a more organized efficient way to study. I also like that this system is compact and able to be fit in to your normal schedule easily. Victus Study Skills System is a great tool in helping your teen learn how to learn.
