While I spend much of the time talking with fellow homeschoolers about helping their children pay attention. I have to admit the apple didn’t fall far from the tree here. I am so scattered at times and hard to focus that my ADHD causes problems in our homeschooling!
I need to pay attention so we can effectively get work done. I want to model good attentive behavior. One of my goals is to show my children that despite having some attention problems I can overcome them and still be productive, just like I am asking them to be!
I have had to make a few rules to help me focus on homeschooling.

This is a true issue for many reasons. As a mom, it is our responsibility to make sure EVERYTHING gets done, not just schoolwork. Laundry, supper, husbands phone calls that require you to drop everything and take care of whatever. My poor kids. I have often set a schedule only to have it totally blown because somebody had a melt down, or the neighbors mom can’t get in touch with her daughter and asked if I could check in. While these ‘distractions’ are often just that, they can also be learning opportunities and ministry opportunities. My children have learned that LIFE happens and sometimes you just have to go with it. They are learning that sometimes “school” arrives in the form of helping the neighbor remove the trees from their roof that the tornado blew over. I like to think that my chldren are learning to be flexible through my (sometimes) inattention to “bookwork”.
