Several years ago my son laid and writhed on the floor of my in-laws house. After repeatedly seeing him carried into the house because he refused to wear is socks and shoes they tried to help. I told them he can’t stand shoes. I told them he HATES socks. They wanted to help me, pregnant and carrying a 4 year old was not easy. So they tried to put on his socks and shoes. The ensuing outburst followed by a 40minute rage was a bit eye opening for them. That day they understood the power of a sensory defensive child.
My son is awesome! He is a great kid that loves everyone and everything in world. Except socks and shoes. With help over the years and a lot of shoe shopping we have been able to keep him in socks he accepts “cause I have to” and shoes that can be big and floppy around his foot. I often wanted to find that perfect pair of socks that would ease the everyday pain of trying to put socks on him.
Now I have found them! Can you believe seamless socks! After years of sock angst I was interested but not terribly hopeful.
The box man brought them..in my house, everyone mobs the poor man every time he comes 🙂 I received 3 white sets of different sizes. I handed Mr Picky the socks to see what he thought. He fingered them for a minute, rubbed them on his cheek and….smiled! He willingly tried them on and wiggled his toes. That was the last time I saw them for over 24 hours of non-stop wearing.
Then came Miss Picky, younger sister very similar sensory issues. She had to put her hand into the sock first to feel it. Then I encouraged her to try them on. Same reaction she loved them. She said “these socks don’t bump my toes” Those socks were gone too. In fact Miss Picky liked to wear them under her footed blanket sleeper.
What exactly are these SmartKnit socks? They come in Kids (from toddler 1- girls and boys 8 ) and Big Kids sizes really adult sizes (sizes women or men from 5 – 11+) All sizes come in standard crew (lower leg) height, some are in knee-high or ankle. There are standard white socks and several colors available.
The sensory great points are the toe seam is some how just barely there. It rounds the toes without rubbing them. Also there is no heel to this sock. The size is printed on the bottom of the sock so if you have buy several sizes, like me, you won’t get frustrated about sizes.

I shared the link with my facebook friends. I have a 9-year-old daughter with Prader-Willi Syndrome and she has a lot of sensory issues as do a lot of children/adults with PWS. Socks are a problem. That darn toe seam drives her crazy and “hurts” her toes. I usually turn her socks inside out and this helps some. These socks sound wonderful – no heel too. I have over 400 facebook friends who have children with PWS and I spread the word about these socks.

My oldest son is super sensitive (as in OCD- SPD). He does not like the feel of socks and he has to wear some or his feet stink (he is 11 but the foot odor like an adult). i hope that in getting these socks they will keep him warm during the long winters here that Iowa seems to being experincing as of late. He wears a size 8 men’s shoe.

Oh my daughter would love these! I am at my wits end trying to get her to wear socks. It starts such a meltdown with tears yelling and throwing herself on the floor!! I feel helpless because I don’t want her feet to be cold but I don’t want her to be upset either!
My other daughter has Type 1 Diabetes and has her own special needs which takes up a lot of my time. Anything to help my daughter with her special needs would be awesome! These socks would make her feel just as special!

Wish me luck! My son was only officially diagnosed as having severe Autism this past Monday and had his first day of Pre-School today. I am thankful that there has finally been a name put to what we have been dealing with these past two years or so. Surprisingly, it offers a little bit of relief knowing what we need to do to help him better.
