I would love to tell you things are getting better but they aren’t. We did get to go to Georgia to see the mitochondrial disease specialist. That was a tremendous help and guide to our future health plans.
The anti seizure medications have slowed down the seizures but not stopped them. The doctor keeps going up on them. I am also having severe problems getting enough hydration and nutrition without some medical intervention. I will be getting some hydration through IV very soon and talking with my GI about more permanent nutrition options.
Here is my newest piece of living room furniture
All the problems recently has pushed my mitochondrial disease to progress. I spend a lot of time in the hospital bed now 🙁
Not one to stay down, hubby and I have been working on how we can homeschool 5 kids from my hospital bed.
I had already decided for 3 of my children that they were going to do Illuminations from Bright Ideas Press. I have made a couple very minor adjustments to their normal schedule to fit our family but I am happy with it. (I am going to write more about our schedule later.)
My two littlest ones will be a bit harder. I have a Preschooler and a 1st grader. I think I am going to piece together their materials and keep them in a Sue Patrick’s Workbox like system.
We are also going to use a couple of computer based programs to enrich or cover the days when I am too sick. Finally to keep things loose and fun we are going to be relying heavily on Amanda Bennett’s Download N Go unit studies!
As a family we are planning several field trips that ought to be outstanding if we can get our wheelchairs in time, or rent them.
Yes, I know that I could just send my kids or even several of them to school. Just because I have become much sicker this year does not mean that the Lord’s plan for my family has changed. We continue to homeschool.
We believe that our children will do better at home with homeschooling then they would in public school no matter my health, even if Daddy has to take over. Do I want my children taught sexual subjects in early elementary, NO. Do I want my children bullied from the first day because their autism makes their initial introductions are awkward, NO. We diverge in so many ways from what is being socially taught in the public school system and at times academically that home is best. Our children’s health would be adversely affected by being around that many germ laden people. I could go on and on…. we made a firm decision to homeschool and we are standing by it.
My husband and I truly and 100% believe that for our family and our children….and MANY more homeschooling is a wonderful option!
Despite the worsening special needs in my home we will push on and homeschool! I hope you will join us and this year and see that you CAN homeschool through anything!

Thank you for encouraging me today. I have CFS and choose to homeschool my two boys. I am not sure how to explain it but I know I was meant to read this today. Thanks for sharing.

I am so glad to see that you are not giving up on homeschooling your children. What a blessing you are to your family. You are an inspiration to me to continue on with how I have chosen to educate my son at home. We are going into our second year of homeschooling. Oh how I wish I had started years ago and included my oldest son in doing it. My oldest is 19, has Asperger’s Disorder, seizures, and ADHD and has even said himself that he wished I had homeschooled him because he felt he would have learned more and done better. He graduated from public school in 2010 and it is a wonder that he learned anything because I feel like they pushed him through. I am currently working with him on his handwwriting to help him improve it and trying to convince to at least take some online classes to try and learn a skill. May we all continue to be blessed in our journey. I will pray for you and your family.

Praying that His strength will be made perfect in your weakness, and that you’ll have many, many joyful schooling days with your children this year! Blessings!

Praying for all of you, Heather!! So many people give such weak reasons for not being able to homeschool their children. You are an inspiration! Have you read Kimberly’s (Raising Olives) post about her mom starting to homeschool her and her many siblings after finding out she had cancer. They may give you some encouragement! Blessings to all of you. Praying you have a good rest tonight!

My hubby and I are planning on homeschooling when we have a little one. We both went through severe bullying all through school. In face, I think an injury I sustained 12 years ago in high school at the hands of a bully is aggravating my medical problems now. Both of us have college degrees, but we are both disabled. When I read about a family homeschooling despite the disability of one or both parents it makes me feel really good and hopeful for the future. 🙂
